Six Areas of Whole Person Development: Social

Focusing on Whole Person Development can change the way you view and convey leadership. The six components of Whole Person Development—emotional intelligence, physical, spiritual, social, psychological, and professional—are the key ingredients to success and fulfillment. In this article, we will be taking a closer look at the social component.

What is the Social Aspect of Whole Person Development?

The social aspect of Whole Person Development can be further subcategorized into two separate types: relationships and giving back. The relationships portion is self-explanatory: it pertains to how one interacts with friends, family, colleagues, etc.  The status of our relationships often coincides with the strength of our emotional intelligence. The stronger our level of emotional intelligence, the more success we will have in building connections, communicating effectively, and developing our relationships with others.

What is “Giving Back?”

The giving back portion of the social aspect is a little more in depth. In today’s society, it’s not uncommon to become consumed with our existence: What do I want? How do I get it? How will it benefit me? With this mindset, it’s easy to forget our social responsibility, and our calling to give back to our communities, organizations we love and causes in which we believe. Giving back is a huge factor in Whole Person Development that often doesn’t get the attention and stimulation for growth that it deserves.

Stop and ask yourself: What am I doing to give back to my world?

How Can I Improve My Social Aspect?

Challenge yourself to find something that you like to do that will help someone or something else. If you’re an animal lover, consider fostering displaced animals until they find their forever home. If you’re an avid reader, consider volunteering to read to children at the local library or seniors at the local retirement home. Find something you like to do that will help someone or something else, and donate your time supporting that cause.

What If I Don’t Have Time?

On the subject of time, people often use a lack of availability as the reason they don’t engage in volunteering and giving back. However, giving back can be as simple as a five-minute phone call to check in on someone going through a hard time. It’s about putting your emotional intelligence to use and paying it forward. When it comes to giving back, quality often outranks quantity.

So what are you going to do to make a difference? What cause calls to you? In addition to helping someone else, there are various benefits of volunteering and giving back to your community, such as skill building and gaining experience and references for your CV. That’s the magic of giving back; it impacts those that you are helping as well as yourself. Remember, it’s the little things that make big differences.
